Two Poems by Ram Tekisui Shepherd

Birdsong

Sixteen years
have gone
since my father died.
No, sixteen seconds.
No, less than a second.
A firefly on a leaf.
A bird song.

Cold Rain

It was raining last night
and the night before --
it is raining still.

Everything darkens --
the wooden table,
chair,
inkpot,
Van Gogh's self portrait
on the wall --
all darkling now.

Within, the silence --
how dear it is
and out in the rainy dark --
fireflies, crickets.
